RE: Universal Waste Drop Off Proposal
Dear Mr. Cahill,
On April 22, 2006 the Los Altos Garbage Company (LAGCo) held a universal
drop off event at the request of the Town. At this event we received 1,701 lbs of
televisions and computers, 2,584 lbs of miscellaneous electronic waste and 76 lbs
of batteries.
The charge for this event was $600.00 to cover the cost of the labor and
equipment and the Town would receive rebates on televisions and computer
($340.20 c@ $.20/lb) and pay the recycling disposal cost for batteries and
florescent lighting bulbs.
The Town has expressed interest in setting up additional universal waste drop off
events on a regular basis. We would suggest setting these events up in conjunction
with the twice per year Town clean ups that LAGCo performs in the spring and
fall each year at the Foothill College parking lot. An additional universal
collection day could be incorporated in the winter (January) along with the
monthly Los Altos Hills Fire District yard, waste drop off that is held on the third
Saturday of each month at the Foothill College parking lot.
The cost for LAGCo to staff each universal waste event is $850.00. This cost is to
cover the expenses for two employees for the event and storage containers for the
material collected at the event. The Town would receive the rebates on the
televisions and computers and pay the recycling disposal on any batteries or
florescent lighting items.
We could incorporate the first universal waste event at the next Town clean up
which is scheduled for October 7, 2006.
