A Resolution of the City Council of the Town Los Altos Hills
Commending Nancy Couperus as
Recipient of the John W. Gardner Community Building Award
for Los Altos /Los Altos Hills
April 1, 2004
WHEREAS,Nancy Couperus, Chair of the Town of Los Altos Hills Open Space
Committee and longtime resident of Los Altos Hills,has devoted over 30 years of her life to
environmental advocacy and open space preservation in our community; and
WHEREAS,Nancy's collaborative leadership, unfailing energy and tremendous
commitment to the well-being of Los Altos Hills has recently and best been demonstrated by her
enormous contributions leading to the success of the LAH Citizens' Open Space Initiative
whereby over 156 acres of open space lands were protected and preserved for future generations;
and
WHEREAS, on December 19, 2002,the Los Altos Hills City Council voted to adopt the
Citizen's Open Space Initiative followed by their unanimous vote to rescind a previous Council-
sponsored initiative thus assuring appropriate land-use designations for Town-owned properties
and the requirement of voter approval to change such designations or sell these assets; and
WHEREAS, following these actions,the City Council formed the Town's first Open
Space Committee,where Nancy was elected Chair,to seek voluntary conservation easements,
work collaboratively with neighboring communities on open space issues and to perform habitat
restoration and maintenance of open space lands; and
WHEREAS,Nancy Couperus has also devoted her life to such worthy programs as the
founding of the 4-H Handicapped Riding Program and provision of leadership and support for
the Friends of Westwind Barn and the campaign to Save the Buffalo; and
WHEREAS,Nancy's enormous contributions to her community and fellow-residents
with the protection and preservation of Los Altos Hills open space and development and
promotion of local recreational programs and assets, is deserving of her community's recognition
and praise.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the Town of Los
Altos Hills does hereby offer its highest commendation to Nancy Couperus for all her
accomplishments in preserving and protecting public open space and recreation in Los Altos
Hills on this occasion of her receipt of the John W. Gardner Community Building Award for Los
Altos/Los Altos Hills.
